Offscript: Anna & Julian in the Jacuzzi

This episode of OffScript features an interview with James McNeel, managing director of Contemporary American Theatre Festival in West Virginia. He was in town/New York City for the Off-Broadway premiere of CATF’s “Uncanny Valley,” by Thomas Gibbons. Assistant editor Diep Tran talks with him about new plays and robots.

Also, the editors of AMERICAN THEATRE discuss succession of Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, and Suzy and Diep get into a heated debate over a “Jacuzzi.” Come on in, the water’s warm!

Every other week, the editors of American Theatre curate a free-ranging discussion about the lively arts.

Our new episode of Offscript ranges widely, from a chat about the orderly succession of power at Steppenwolf Theatre Company, as Martha Lavey passes the baton Anna D. Shapiro, and David Hawkanson to David Schmitz; to an interview with Contemporary American Theatre Festival managing director James McNeel, who was visiting New York for a staging of Thomas Gibbons’s The Uncanny Valley, a drama about an eerily human robot named Julian (currently playing at 59E59 Theaters); to a heated (ahem) discussion of the Debate Society’s new crypto-thriller Jacuzzi. Also recommended and/or cited in this podcast: Our new feature about other podcasts, “Top of the Pods,” and debbie trucker green’s generations.
