Penguin Rep Announces 2015 Season

Plays by Frederick Stroppel, Aaron Posner, Mark St. Germain and David Robson are on the slate.

STONY POINT, N.Y.: Penguin Rep Theatre has announced its 2015 season, the theatre’s 38th. It will include a behind-the-scenes story of the making of a Disney classic, the story of a Brooklyn boy made good and the beginnings of America’s most famous sex therapist.

First up is the New York premiere of Small World (May 15–June 7) by Frederick Stroppel, which imagines meetings between Walt Disney and Igor Stravinsky about the use of the composer’s Rite of Spring in Fantasia.

Then it’s Aaron Posner’s My Name Is Asher Lev (July 10–Aug. 2), adapted from Chaim Potok’s novel of the same name about a young man who goes against the wishes of his family and his traditional Jewish community to become an artist.

Next is the story of how Karola Ruth Siegel escaped Nazi Germany, came to America, and became a popular sex therapist in Mark St. Germain’s Becoming Dr. Ruth (Aug. 14–Sept. 6). The role will be played by Anne O’Sullivan.

Closing the season will be the world premiere of Priceless (Oct. 2–25) by David Robson, about a high schooler who reaches out to the school bully for help.

In addition to its mainstage productions, Penguin will also host a play reading series titled Just Desserts, which will run on June 1 and 15, July 20 and 17. A children’s production of Theatreworks USA’s Sweet Potato Pie and Such will be performed on July 15 featuring a performance by Queen Nur. And on September 26, there will be a performance of A Jew Grows in Brooklyn which has been underwritten by Barry and Helene Lewis.

Penguin Rep was founded in 1977, and is currently led by founding artistic director Joe Brancato and executive director Andrew M. Horn.
