The Drama League Announces 2015 Directing Fellows

Eleven fellows will participate in the program, which encompasses four different areas of study.

NEW YORK CITY: The Drama League has named 11 emerging directors as fellows as part of its annual Directors Project. The recipients, selected from among the largest group of applicants the organization has ever seen, fall into four different areas of study: the New York Directing Program, the Hangar Directing Program, the Classical Directing Program and a new fellowship program, to be announced at the awards ceremony on May 15.

“Of the over 2,000 artists supported by the Drama League’s programs each year, the Directors Project Fellows are the centerpiece of our mission,” said executive director Gabriel Shanks in a statement. “I couldn’t be more proud to present these talented artists to the larger community, and to watch them take the next steps in their promising careers.”

Estefanía Fadul, Annie Tippe, Sarah Elizabeth Wansley and Brandon Woolf will participate in the New York Directing fellowships, an immersive experience working in the professional theatre, both regionally and in New York. The program concludes with a festival of the directors’ work presented Off-Broadway.

Paul Bedard, Aneesha Kudtarkar, Austin Regan and Dan Rogers will receive the Hangar Directing fellowships. The program, a partnership with the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca, N.Y., asks the fellows to lead a resident acting company in programming, directing and producing for the second stage season at the theatre.

Emily Lyon and Brad Raimondo will participate in the Classical Directing Program, a partnership with the Old Globe, Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival and Shakespeare & Company. The fellowship is a summer residency at the participating theatres, in which the young directors will assist on mainstage productions and work in educational and touring programs.

A fourth program and eleventh recipient will be announced on May 15.

All the fellowships will begin on May 11 with Drama League Professionals Week, when fellows will meet industry leaders, attend shows and begin developmental training. They will also be introduced at the awards ceremony on May 15.

Founded in 1984, the Drama League Directors Project is a development program for emerging directors, and its 300 alumni can be found directing for stage, working in film and television and leading regional theatres.
