New York Theatre Workshop Season to Include David Bowie and Anaïs Mitchell

The slate also includes new work by Lucas Hnath and Sibyl Kempson, with Elevator Repair Service.

NEW YORK CITY: New York Theatre Workshop has announced its 2015–16 season, which includes 3 world premieres and two form-bending music-theatre pieces.

The season begins with the world premiere of Sibyl Kempson’s Fondly, Collette Richland, with a performance by the company-in-residence Elevator Repair Service. The play is about a couple summoned through a secret door in their living room to a “phantasmagorical” world. Artistic director John Collins will direct and the production will feature live compositions performed by Mike Iveson.

Next will be David Bowie and Enda Walsh’s Lazarus, based on the 1963 novel The Man Who Fell to Earth by Walter Trevis and the 1976 screen adaptation of the book, which starred Bowie. The play will feature songs by Bowie created for the production. Ivo van Hove will direct.

Following will be Lucas Hnath’s Red Speedo, which takes place on the eve of the Olympic swim trials and explores America’s obsession with winning at all costs. Lileana Blain-Cruz will direct.

Finishing the season will be Hadestown, a theatrical transformation of singer/songwriter Anaïs Mitchell’s concept album into a folk opera. The story, which follows Orpheus’s quest to overcome Hades and win the love of Eurydice, is developed and directed by Rachel Chavkin.
