Rhinebeck Writers Retreat Selects 17 Musical Theatre Writers

Elizabeth A. Davis, Kirsten Childs and Mike Lew are among the artists who will develop new musicals at the Upstate New York retreat.

RHINEBECK, N.Y.: The Rhinebeck Writers Retreat has announced the 17 musical theatre artists who have been selected to participate in its 2015 residency program. The retreat, which includes a private home, transportation, food and a $400 stipend, will offer the writers the chance to work on eight separate projects.

The writers, with their projects and retreat dates, are:

Charlie Sohn and Tim Rosser‘s Run Away Home (July 5–12), about a young man who poses as a missing child in a desperate search for a family.

John Dietrich and Will Buck‘s Only Anne (July 12–19), a musical adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion.

Matthew Doers and Eric Webb‘s Taking Step Three13 (July 19–26), a modern reimagining of Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment with rock and hip-hop music.

Elizabeth A. Davis, Luke Holloway and Jason Michael Webb‘s Indian Joe (July 26–Aug. 2), about a Native American homeless man’s unlikely friendship with a Texas pageant queen.

Kellen Blair and Joe Kinosian‘s The More Things Change (Aug. 2–9), about a songwriter who turns a one-hit wonder into a Broadway musical.

Kirsten Childs‘s Buffalo Bella: An American Tall Tale (Aug. 9–16), about the wild journey of a young African-American woman in the late 19th century who travels to New Mexico to be reunited with her sweetheart.

David Hein and Irene Sankoff‘s Mitzvah (Aug. 16–23), about a  boy with autism and his family’s fight to give him a meaningful bar mitzvah.

Mike LewRehana Lew Mirza and Sam Willmott‘s Bhangin’ It (August 23–30), about a biracial Indian girl who forms a Banghra dance team on her college campus.
