Mildred’s Umbrella Announces 2015–16 Season

The season’s roster includes works (mostly) by, for and about women.

HOUSTON: Mildred’s Umbrella Theater has announced its 2015–16 season, including a world premiere, a surprise show and a new works festival.

“This is one of our most ambitious seasons yet,” said artistic director Jennifer Decker in a statement. “Not only does it represent an even stronger commitment to producing bold, fresh, innovative works, but it also serves to help further solidify Mildred’s Umbrella as Houston’s premiere female-focused theatre company.”

The season begins with The Drowning Girls (July 16–Aug. 1) by Beth Graham, Charlie Tomlinson and Daniela Vlaskalic. The mounting of this play, based on the “brides in the bath” murders in early 20th century England, coincides with the 100th anniversary of George Joseph Smith‘s trial and execution. Jon Harvey will direct.

Next will be Mac Wellman’s Dracula (Oct. 15–31), about  two sexually repressed women who find freedom and passion in the vampiric world of Victorian London. Decker will direct.

Following will be a secret surprise show (Jan. 21–23, 2016), which will be announced on Nov. 20 following hints on social media. Ron Jones will direct.

Next will be the world premiere of Katharine Sherman’s Dollface (April 28–May 14, 2016), an exploration of  how childhood fairy tales contribute to the double standards and rape culture in today’s society. Jacey Little will direct.

The season concludes with the short play festival Museum of Dysfunction VIII (June 23–July 2, 2016), featuring new works from local, national and international playwrights.
