La Jolla Playhouse Slates Ambitious Lineup for Site-Specific WoW Festival

The October fest draws national companies to create work that will sprawl through various locations in the UC San Diego area.

LA JOLLA, CALIF.: La Jolla Playhouse has announced the projects and collaborators for its second site-specific Without Walls (WoW) Festival, which will take place Oct. 9–11. The 2015 WoW Festival will feature more than 20 events scheduled in and around the UC San Diego and La Jolla Playhouse theatre district.

“Our inaugural Without Walls Festival in 2013 exceeded our wildest expectations, demonstrating that San Diego audiences continue to have a voracious appetite for one-of-a-kind experiences that transform our customary idea of theatre,” said artistic director Christopher Ashley in a statement.

The festival begins with the West Coast premiere of Liz Lerman’s Healing Wars (Sept. 29–Oct. 25), an exploration of how soldiers and healers cope with the physical and psychological wounds of war. Healing Wars is the first WoW production to be part of the La Jolla Playhouse’s subscription series. Lerman will choreograph and direct.

The rest of the festival includes:

  • The world premiere of Hannah Ryan and Melissa Gordon’s Every Path, a site-specific production about a woman’s journey through adulthood that will take place in La Jolla’s gardens.
  • Seven Butterflies, a micro-concert performed by cellist Jennifer Bewerse. The concert includes a simultaneous performance during which a monarch butterfly will be released into the air.
  • UC San Diego Projects’s Clouds in My Room, by Patricia Rincon and Drift Company, a solo dance-theatre piece about a woman playing an accordion all by her lonesome.
  • The world premiere of David Jacobi’s A Completely Factual Tour, an audioplay bringing together absurdist theatre and choreography.
