New Theatre Sets 30th Anniversary Season

The season will feature four world premieres from local playwrights and one classic.

MIAMI: New Theatre has announced the line-up for its 2015–16 season—its 30th, under the collective title “Memories.” The season will feature the return of four local playwrights: Susan J. Westfall, New Theatre artistic director Ricky J. Martinez, Sandra Riley, and Mario Diament.

The season will open with the world premiere of Westfall’s Two Weekends and a Day (Nov. 20–Dec. 13). Set on the front porches of two houses, the play follows four friends as they grow older.

Following is the American premiere of Diament’s Franz & Albert (Jan. 29–Feb. 21, 2016). The play imagines a meeting between Franz Kafka and Albert Einstein met in Prague in 1911.

The play will be presented in rotating repertory with the world premiere of Footprints by Riley, who is a local historian. The play is about two Florida residents who create a new community in Coconut Grove and fight to save the Paradise Key Everglades.

Next will be the world premiere of ROOF! by Martinez (April 8–May 1, 2016). The play revolves around two young Cuban-American roommates, and a rooftop barbecue that turns contentious.

The season will close with Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman (May/June 2016), about a salesman and family man who discovers that the American dream is a myth.
