VENTURA, CALIF.: Rubicon Theatre Company has announced its 2016 season, which is has given the title “Fair Ladies, Fine Gentleman (and Others).”
The season begins with Arlene Hutton’s See Rock City (Jan. 27—Feb. 14, 2016), about a young couple honeymooning in the Appalachians during post-war America. Lily Nicksay and Erik Odom will star, and Katharine Farmer will direct.
Next will be the American premiere of Jethro Compton’s adaptation of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (March 2—20, 2016), about an aging cowpoke and a tenderfoot schoolteacher in the Wild West. Artistic associate Jenny Sullivan will direct.
Following will be the American premiere of Sabina Berman’s eXtras (April 13—May 1, 2016), based on Marie Jones’s Stones in His Pockets, about a Hollywood film crew who arrive in Mexico to shoot a major motion picture and wreak havoc on the village. The production will feature original music composed by Maya Burns, who will perform preshow and at intermission with a three-piece band.
Next will be David Rintels’s Clarence Darrow (May 25—June 12, 2016), a one-man show about the controversial trial lawyer who demanded more than $25 million dollars for each case. Cofounder and artistic director emeritus James O’Neill, whose great-grandfather was Clarence Darrow’s cousin, will star.
Following is Bob Carlton’s Return to the Forbidden Planet (Oct. 26—Nov. 13, 2016), a campy rendition of the sci-fi film Forbidden Planet, which was loosely based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest and set on a spaceship sometime in the future.
