Jobsite Theater Announces 6-Play 2016–17 Season

Next season at the Florida theatre will include plays by Steve Martin, Martin McDonagh, Israel Horovitz, and Caryl Churchill.

TAMPA, FLA.: Jobsite Theater has announced its 2016–17 season, a lineup of six plays.

The season will open with Steve Martin’s The Underpants (Sept. 7–Oct. 2), a satire adapted from Carl Sternheim’s Die Hose, about a moment of indecent exposure that threatens the job of a government clerk.

Next will be Lizzie by Steven Cheslik-DeMeyer, Tim Maner, and Alan Stevens Hewitt (Oct. 12–Nov. 6), in which a rock band fronted by four women gathers to tell the story of Lizzie Borden. Jobsite producing artistic director David M. Jenkins will direct.

Following will be William Shakespeare’s As You Like It (Jan. 11–Feb. 5, 2017). Jenkins will direct.

Martin McDonagh’s A Skull in Connemara will follow (March 15–April 9, 2017). In it, a man is hired to disinter the bones from a local cemetery, including those of his late wife. Jobsite artistic associate Paul J. Potenza will direct.

After that will be Israel Horovitz’s Gloucester Blue (May 17–June 11, 2017), a dark comedy about working-class house painters in Gloucester, Mass. Jenkins will direct.

Caryl Churchill’s Cloud 9 will close the season (July 12–Aug. 6, 2017). The play is set in both colonial Africa and 1979 London, and explores colonial and sexual repression. Jobsite originally produced the play in 2003.

In addition to the season lineup, Jobsite also announced that the world premiere FULL. The Musical—featuring a book and lyrics by Katie Berger and music by Berger and Alan Blake Conley—will open the theatre’s 2017–18 season. The musical is an exploration of how to live life in spite of one’s personal demons. It will be developed during the 2016–17 season.

Jobsite has been the resident company of the Straz Center for the Performing Arts since 2003. Its mission is to produce socially and politically relevant theatre, with new and under-produced works.
