Winners included ‘Hamilton,’ ‘The Humans,’ ‘The Color Purple,’ and ‘A View from the Bridge.’

NEW YORK CITY: The Drama League has announced the winners of its 82nd annual awards, honoring productions, performances, and career achievements on and Off-Broadway. A ceremony was held in New York City on May 20.

This year’s recipients include:

Outstanding Production of a Musical: Hamilton
Outstanding Production of a Play: The Humans
Outstanding Revival of a Musical: The Color Purple
Outstanding Revival of a Play: A View from the Bridge
Distinguished Performance Award: Lin-Manuel Miranda

In addition to the competitive categories, honors were given to individual artists and theatre companies. Lyricist Sheldon Harnick was honored with the Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theatre Award (he’s currently represented on Broadway with Fiddler on the Roof and She Loves Me). Deaf West Theatre was lauded with the Unique Contribution to the Theatre Award, for its revival of Spring Awakening that was on Broadway earlier this season. Ivo van Hove (director of A View from the Bridge) was honored with the Founders Award for Excellence in Directing.

First awarded in 1922 and formalized in 1935, the Drama League Awards are the only major theatrical award chosen by audience members: thousands of Drama League members nationwide.
