ENGLEWOOD, COLO.: Phamaly Theatre Company has announced its 2016-17 season, featuring a mix of musicals and new takes on classics.
The season will begin with James and the Giant Peach (Oct. 21- May, 2017), with lyrics and music by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, and a book by Timothy Allen McDonald, based on the book by Roald Dahl. The story follows an orphan boy who befriends garden bugs inside of a giant peach and plots an adventure from England to New York.
Just in time for the holidays will be Tiny Tim’s Christmas Carol (Dec. 1-18), by Ken Ludwig and Jack Ludwig, a retelling of Charles Dickens’ classic tale. The production will be collaboration with the theatre department at the Community College of Denver, and Paul Dwyer will direct.
Next up will be George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion (Feb. 23-March 12, 2017), about a professor of phonetics who makes a bet that he can train a bedraggled cockney girl to pass for a duchess at an ambassador’s garden party. Carol Howarth will direct.
Following will be the musical Peter Pan (July 13-Aug. 6, 2017), based on the play by J.M. Barrie, featuring lyrics by Carolyn Leigh, additional lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, music by Morris Charlap, and additional music by Jule Styne. The young actors will venture to Neverland with flying wheelchairs.
Also part of the season will be a staged reading of Spirits of Another Sort (May 6-7, 2017), based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The reading will be collaboration with the Apothetae Theatre.
