Princeton University Names Jane Cox Director of Theatre Program

The lauded lighting designer will begin her new post at the university in July.

PRINCETON, N.J.: Princeton University’s Lewis Center for the Arts has named Jane Cox the director of Princeton University’s Program in Theater. Cox has been a member of the program since 2007 and was recently promoted to senior lecturer. She succeeds Tim Vasen, who served as director since 2012, and passed away in December. Her new appointment will begin July 1.

“Jane Cox is a brilliant lighting designer, a gifted teacher and mentor, and a visionary, collaborative administrator,” said Stacy Wolf, acting chair of the Lewis Center, in a statement.  “We’re thrilled that she will lead the Program in Theater to our next stage, both figuratively and literally, when we relocate to the arts and transit neighborhood in fall 2017.”

Cox, originally from Dublin, is an award-winning lighting designer. Her recent projects include Hamlet at the National Theatre, Amelie at the Ahmanson Theater, Noises Off on Broadway, and a new play about Roe v. Wade, which will appear at Arena Stage and Berkeley Rep this season. Her work on Machinal in 2014 earned her Tony and Drama Desk nominations. She was the recipient of the Henry Hewes Design Award in 2013 for her work on The Flick. At Princeton, Cox has designed lighting for numerous productions and has taught courses in lighting design, advanced theatrical design, and a freshman seminar.

“I’m honored to be taking over the Program in Theater from the brilliant and generous Tim Vasen, and excited to continue to work with the gifted students, faculty, staff, artists and artisans at the Lewis Center for the Arts,” said Cox in a statement.
