SAN DIEGO: After 13 years at the Old Globe, managing director Michael G. Murphy will step down on Sept. 26. He has accepted a position as the president and CEO of Shea’s Performing Arts Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

“Michael has done extraordinary work over the 13 years he has been with the theatre, helping to take it to the level it is today,” said Vicki L. Zeiger, chair of the Globe’s board of directors, in a statement. “His relationships with the board, supporters, artists, staff, and patrons of the Globe have been productive and immensely rewarding, and he has set a high standard in representing the unique needs of the theatre in our beautiful and historic Balboa Park setting.”

Murphy served as general manager of the Old Globe from 2003 until 2012, when he became the managing director. He managed the construction of the Globe’s new theatre and education facilities, and led the development of sensory-friendly performances.

“I will miss San Diego and the Old Globe, especially the dedicated and creative staff who dare to tackle any challenge, raising the bar time after time,” said Murphy in a statement. “Under the artistic leadership of Barry Edelstein, which builds upon the Globe’s historic legacy and broadens its impact, the theatre will have a bright and flourishing future.”
