Offscript: Good Riddance 2016! With Kris Vire

In this week’s podcast, we discuss our favorite shows of 2016, give you some behind-the-scenes highlights of some notable AT stories, and talk to Kris Vire about what’s going on in Chicago with the Neo-Futurists.

Every other week, the editors of American Theatre curate a free-ranging discussion about the lively arts in our Offscript podcast.

Welcome to another edition of our year-end extravaganza! In this week’s episodes, all five AT editors are in the house to close a year that was full of great theatre and some terrible events everywhere else. Rob Weinert-Kendt, Suzy Evans, Diep Tran, Russell Dembin, and Allison Considine discuss the best shows they’ve seen this year. Some artists we shout out: Stephen Karam, Qui Nguyen, Sarah DeLappe, Lynn Nottage, Danai Gurira, and Taylor Mac. Then we regale you with tales of AT articles, including what we loved working on, and some behind-the-scenes stories.

Then Kris Vire, senior editor of Time Out Chicago, Skypes into the office to fill us in on some end-of-year news, primarily what is going on in Chicago with the Neo-Futurists, and why former founder Greg Allen revoked the rights to their long-running show Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind.

Finally, we close the show with hopes for the theatre field in 2017. Short version: more diversity onstage, cheaper ticket prices, and hopes that someone will turn La La Land into a stage musical.

Happy holidays to all our readers and listeners. We can’t do the work that we do without you. We will see you in 2017!
