Triad Stage Sets 2017-18 Season

The season will include the return of holiday traditions, new plays, and a classic musical.

GREENSBORO, N.C.: Triad Stage has announced its 2017-18 season, which will include eight productions.

“As Triad Stage continues to create provocative and entertaining theatre for the Triad, we’ve tried to shape our next season to include unique and varied productions,” said founding artistic director Preston Lane in a statement. “The selection of work is based on partnerships and collaborations as well as conversations with our audience. From a classic Broadway musical to two of the greatest of all American plays, we’re putting our unique perspective on classics as well as exploring two extraordinary contemporary works and a world premiere.”

The season will begin with South Pacific (Sept. 17-Oct. 8), in partnership with University of North Carolina—Greensboro, featuring a book by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan and music by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Hammerstein. The musical follows a Midwestern nurse and a young lieutenant who fall for each other at a U.S. military stopover in the South Pacific.

Next up will be Buyer & Cellar (Oct. 11-22), by Jonathan Tolins, about an out-of-work actor who begins working for Barbra Streisand in a private mall located in the basement of her Malibu home.

Following will be the return of A Christmas Carol (Nov. 24-Dec. 25), adapted by Preston Lane from Charles Dickens. The production will be presented at the Hanesbrands Theatre in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Next up for the holidays will be the return of Lane’s Beautiful Star: An Appalachian Nativity (Dec. 3-24), featuring original music by Laurelyn Dossett, about a congregation putting a Blue Ridge region spin on the classic nativity story.

The season will continue with Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun (Jan. 28- Feb. 18, 2018), about a family on the south side of Chicago waiting for a life insurance payment that could change their circumstances.

Next up will be Thornton Wilder’s Our Town (Feb. 14-25, 2018), about an All-American town at the turn of the 20th century.

Following will be Paula Vogel’s How I Learned to Drive (April 4-15, 2018), about a teenager learning to rules of the road and how to navigate the dark roads of life.

The season will conclude with the world premiere of Lane’s The Passion of Teresa Rae King (April 29-May 20, 2018), inspired by Émile Zola’s novel Thérèse Raquin, about a young woman who plots to free herself from her husband and terrorizing mother-in-law.

Triad Stage, founded in 1999, presents classic and contemporary plays and musicals at its two performance spaces, the  Pyrle Theater in Greensboro, N.C., and Hanesbrands Theatre in Winston-Salem, N.C..
