Lookingglass Theatre Company Announces 2017-18 Season

The season will include two world premieres and the return of a circus-inspired show.

CHICAGO: Lookingglass Theatre Company has announced its 2017-18 season, featuring three works.

“I am elated to announce our 30th anniversary season with three stories that will, in turn, showcase the power of the imagination, hilariously upend preconceived notions of race and family, and return us to the seas for an epic adventure that dives deep into our own truths,” said artistic director Heidi Stillman in a statement.

The season will begin with the return of Hard Times (Oct. 4-Jan. 14, 2018), adapted by Stillman from Charles Dickens, about the poor residents of Coketown, England in the 19th century. The production, which first bowed at the theatre in 2001, will be presented in association with the Actors Gymnasium. The cast will include David Catlin, Raymond Fox, and Troy West. Stillman will direct.

Next up will be the world premiere of Plantation! (Feb. 21-April 22, 2018), by Kevin Douglas, about a Texas matriarch who discovers the sordid history of the family’s ancestral home. The cast will include Louise Lamson and Tamberla Perry. David Schwimmer will direct.

Following will be the world premiere of  20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (May 23-Aug. 19, 2018), adapted by David Kersnar and Althos Low from Jules Verne, about a terrifying sea monster that inspires a renowned scientist and fellow explorers to embark on a dangerous seaward mission. Kareem Bandealy and Kasey Foster will perform, and Kersnar will direct.

Founded in 1988, Lookingglass Theatre Company produces new and cutting edge work, presented by its ensemble members.
