Dallas Theater Center Sets 2 World Premieres for 2017-18 Season

The season includes an immersive production of ‘Hair’ and world premieres from Boo Killebrew and Aaron Loeb.

DALLAS: Dallas Theater Center has announced its 2017-18 season, its 50th. The seven-show season will include a mix of contemporary musicals, new plays, and two world premieres.

“Our 2017-18 season continues DTC’s commitment to producing new work that speaks meaningfully to our contemporary lives, unique productions that use the Wyly Theatre space in creative ways, collaborations with locally and nationally recognized artistic partners, and productions that will leave our audiences inspired and eager to engage in lively conversation,” said artistic director Kevin Moriarty in a statement.

The season will kick off with the world premiere of Boo Killebrew‘s Miller, Mississippi (Aug. 30-Oct. 1). The Southern Gothic play follows one family during the Civil Rights Movement. Lee Sunday Evans will direct.

Next up will be Hair (Sept. 22-Oct. 22), by Gerome Ragni, James Rado, and Galt MacDermot. The tribal-love-rock musical will be staged in an immersive fashion. Moriarty will direct.

For the holidays, the theatre will mount Moriarty’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol (Nov. 22-Dec. 28). Lee Trull will direct.

DTC will also mount FADE by Tanya Saracho (Dec. 6, 2017-Jan. 7, 2018). The two-hander takes place in a Los Angeles television studio, where the only Latinx people are one screenwriter and the office janitor. Christie Vela will direct.

In February, DTC will team up with Southern Methodist University’s School of the Arts for Nick Dear’s adaptation of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (Feb. 2-March 4, 2018). The production will feature a mix of students and professionals.

Following the success of DTC’s 2016 production of All the Way by Robert Schenkkan, the theatre will present the sequel to that play, The Great Society (March 9-April 1, 2018). The play takes place during the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson as he navigates the “war on poverty” and the Vietnam War. Moriarty will direct. The play will be a coproduction with Houston’s Alley Theatre.

The second world premiere of the season will be The Trials of Sam Houston by Aaron Loeb (April 20-May 13, 2018). The play takes place on the eve of Texas’s succession from the union in 1851, as governor Sam Houston is torn between loyalty to Texas and loyalty to the United States.

The spring will continue with White Rabbit Red Rabbit by Nassim Soleimanpour (May 30-July 1, 2018). The play is performed every night by a different actor, who has never seen the script and is looking at the work for the first time.

The season will wrap up with the second installment of Public Works Dallas, with Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale (Aug. 31-Sept. 2, 2018). It will feature 200 cast members, only five of whom will be professional actors, and will be a collaboration between Dallas community members and organizations.

Dallas Theater Center was founded in 1959 and serves more than 100,000 North Texas residents annually.
