Hudson Valley Shakes Announces 2017 Summer Season

The theatre will present world premieres by Lauren Gunderson and Kate Hamill as part of the lineup.

GARRISON, N.Y.: Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival (HVSF) has announced its 2017 summer season, featuring two world premieres.

The first show will be Lauren Gunderson’s The Book of Will (June 9-July 28), part of a rolling world premiere. The story follows the creation of Shakespeare’s First Folio. The cast will include Mary Bacon, Michael Broadhurst, Stephen Paul Johnson, Krystel Lucas, Sean McNall, Ruibo Qian, Kurt Rhoads, and David Ryan Smith. Artistic director Davis McCallum will direct.

Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night (June 8-Aug. 27) will be next. The cast will feature Mary Bacon, Michael Broadhurst, Stephen Paul Johnson, Krystel Lucas, Sean McNall, Ruibo Qian, Kurt Rhoads, and David Ryan Smith. Moritz von Stuelpnagel will direct.

Next up will be the world premiere of Kate Hamill’s new adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (June 10-Sept. 4). Coproduced with New York City’s Primary Stages, the production will include Mark Bedard, Kimberly Chatterjee, Jason O’Connell, Amelia Pedlow, Chris Thorn, John Tufts, and Nance Williamson. Amanda Dehnert will direct.

Richard Nelson’s The General From America (Aug. 4-Sept. 3) will follow. Presented in associated with Boscobel House and Gardens, also in Garrison, the show’s cast will feature Mark Bedard, Michael Broadhurst, Kimberly Chatterjee, Kate Hamill, Stephen Paul Johnson, Jason O’Connell, Amelia Pedlow, Kurt Rhoads, Chris Thorn, John Tufts, and Nance Williamson. Penny Metropulos will direct.

The final work of the season will be Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost (Aug. 14-29), which will be coproduced with the Acting Company of NYC. The cast will feature the HVSF Conservatory Company, including Maryn Shaw, Serena Miller, Daniel Liu, Luis Quintero, Zach Fike Hodges, Sky Smith, Jade Radford, and Marielle Young. Ian Belknap will direct. The production will travel to venues in the Hudson Valley as part of the theatre’s On the Road series and will come to New York City schools in fall 2017 with the Acting Company.
