A.D. Players Announces 2017-18 Season

The lineup features five mainstage productions and a series of children’s shows.

HOUSTON: A.D. Players has announced its 2017-18 season, which will feature five mainstage productions and four children’s shows. It will be the company’s first full season at the Jeanette and L.M. George Theater in Uptown Houston.

“We are delighted to announce this first full season of shows in the George Theater,” said Jeannette Clift George, founder of A. D. Players, in a statement. “Our venue has changed, but our mission has not: The stories we tell from the stage, our teaching and training, our presence in the community—all of the work we do is communicated and offered under the creative signature of God.”

The mainstage season will open with Mary Chase’s Harvey (Sept. 6-Oct. 1), a comedy about a man and his imaginary rabbit.

Next up will be the holiday favorite The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (Nov. 29-Dec. 23), by Barbara Robinson from her young adult novel about a group of rebellious children who take over the annual pageant.

The new year will begin with Mark St. Germain’s Best of Enemies (Jan. 10-Feb. 4, 2018), based on the book by Osha Gray Davidson, about the true story of a relationship between a Ku Klux Klan leader and a Civil Rights activist.

Next up will be Lilies of the Field (April 18-May 13, 2018), adapted by F. Andrew Leslie from the novel by William E. Barret. The story is about a handyman who builds a chapel for immigrant nuns.

Neil Simon’s comedy God’s Favorite (July 11-Aug. 5, 2018), which reimagines the Book of Job, will be the final mainstage show.

The children’s season will open with A Wrinkle in Time (March 14-31, 2018), adapted by John Glore from Madeleine L’Engle’s book, a science fantasy story about a young girl whose father goes missing.

Next will be Robb Brunson’s David, the Best Slinger in the West (June 6-22, 2018), a retelling of the story of David and Goliath.

Barry Kornhauser’s Balloonacy (Oct. 17-Nov. 4, 2018), which showcases the joys of imagination and friendship, will follow.

The final children’s show will be Rock Nativity (Dec. 7-23, 2018), with book by David Wood and music by Jackie Trent and Tony Hatch, a pop-filled retelling of the Christmas story.

Founded in 1967, A.D. Players is Houston’s only professional Christian theatre company.
