Rattlestick Playwrights Theater Announces 2017-18 Season

The slate will include new plays and workshop productions by the Rattlestick Apprentice Company.

NEW YORK CITY: Rattlestick Playwrights Theater has announced its 2017-18 season, featuring three shows and two workshop productions from the Rattlestick Apprentice Company.

The season will start with Diana Oh’s {my lingerie play} 2017: Installation #9 THE CONCERT AND CALL TO ARMS!!!!!!!!! (Sept. 29-Oct. 28), presented in association with Rosalind Productions, Inc., the culmination of a series of street installations that have taken place in New York City, Washington, D.C., and New Orleans over the past four months. Ryan McCurdy will provide music direction, and Stephanie Ryan Johnstone and Oh will co-direct.

Next up will be Until the Flood (January-Febuary, 2018), written and performed by Dael Orlandersmith, a one-person show created in response to Michael Brown’s death in Ferguson, Mo. Neel Keeler will direct.

Following will be Draw the Circle (February 2018), written and performed by Mashuq Mushtaq Deen, a piece about the complex experiences of a loved one transitioning from one gender to another. Chay Yew will direct.

Rattlestick’s Apprentice Company, Middle Voice at Rattlestick, will begin its season with a workshop staging of Xavier Galva’s The Parlour (Sept. 1-10). The play explores the chaotic world of fine dining in NYC.

Next up, the Middle Voice at Rattlestick season will include a workshop run of The Enclave (March 2018), by Arthur Laurents, about a seemingly liberal group of friends that ousts one of their own when he introduces his boyfriend to the group. The play, first produced in 1973, is the recipient of Arthur Laurents Centennial Grant given by Laurents/Hatcher Foundation to revive the work. Victor Cervantes Jr. will direct.

Founded in 1994, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater develops and produces new plays. The Rattlestick Apprentice Company, led by Lucy Thurber, includes 18-30-year-old theatre artists from traditionally diverse and underrepresented communities.
