MINNEAPOLIS: Mixed Blood Theatre has announced its 2017-18 season. The four-show lineup will include a world premiere play by Leah Nanako Winkler and a world premiere musical from David Valdes Greenwood and Eric Mayson.
“Mixed Blood is at the center of a societal asterisk which enables cultural collisions to occur and catalytic reactions to propel all participants in that collision to thrive,” said artistic director Jack Reuler in a statement. “In this 42nd season, ‘Connecting the Disconnected’—disability meets immigrants meets trans youth meets refugees meets ICE meets class meets the gender continuum. With stories spanning the globe and populated by have-nots, 2017-18’s fusion offerings synthesize the aesthetics of the past with the politics of the present and a vision for the future.”
The season will open with How to Use a Knife by Will Snider (Sept. 29-Oct. 15). The play takes place in a restaurant kitchen, where the immigrant workers are shaken when an ICE agent arrives. Jesca Prudencio will direct.
The second play of the season will be The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Simon Stephens, based on the novel by Mark Haddon (Nov. 10-Dec. 3). The Tony-winning play is about a young man on the autism spectrum who sets out to investigate the bizarre death of his neighbor’s dog. Reuler will direct.
Next will be the world premiere of Two Mile Hollow by Leah Nanako Winkler (Feb. 16-March 4, 2018). The satire is about a wealthy white family, who reunites in the family’s country house, where complicated secrets are revealed. Mu Performing Arts will coproduce the play and its artistic director Randy Reyes will direct.
The season will close with the world premiere of Mermaid Hour: ReMixed, a musical by David Valdes Greenwood and Eric Mayson (April 6-29, 2018). The chamber musical explores the gender continuum through the eyes of a pre-pubescent transgender biracial girl. Leah Anderson will direct.
Mixed Blood has been producing “provocative, inclusive, and predictably unpredictable theatre” since 1976.
