LOS ANGELES: The 24th Street Theatre has announced its 2017-18 season, featuring four productions.

“The upcoming season marks our 20th year of magical theatre that speaks to the urgency of the times in which we live,” said executive director Jay McAdams in a statement. “We’re proud to offer an eclectic mix of provocative theatre to adults and kids alike that’s as fun as it is important. And to do it in both English and Spanish.”

The season will open with the return of La Razón Blindada (Armored Reason) (Sept. 9-Oct. 15), written and directed by Arístides Vargas, a political drama performed in Spanish with English supertitles. Jesus Castaños Chima and Tony Duran will reprise their starring roles.

Also part of the programming will be 24th Street Theatre’s annual block party celebrating Dia de los Muertos (Nov. 2), featuring music by the Space Sanchos, homemade tamales, face painting, and more.

Next up will be Dan Froot and Company’s Pang! (Dec. 2-3), three live radio plays based on the stories of three families living with hunger in Miami, Cedar Rapids, and South Central Los Angeles.

Just in time for the holidays will be La Víspera (The Eve) (Dec. 14-17), a holiday play created by members of the local University Park immigrant community. Performances will be presented in Spanish with English supertitles, and homemade tamales, hot chocolate, and a traditional star-shaped piñata will follow each show.

Following will be the world premiere of ICE (March 10-April 29, 2018), by Leon Martell, a bilingual comedy about two undocumented immigrants who arrive to the U.S. with big dreams and aspirations for their taco truck to win the “Most American Food Truck” contest at Dodger Stadium on the Fourth of July. The cast will include Jesús Castaños-Chima, Tony Duran, Davitt Felder, and Andrew Huber. Debbie Devine will direct.

The 24th Street Theater, founded in 1997, presents words for both adult and family audiences in both Spanish and English.
