Antoinette Nwandu Receives 2017-18 Paula Vogel Playwriting Award

The writer of ‘Pass Over’ will receive a cash prize and support to develop new work.

NEW YORK CITY: Vineyard Theatre has named Antoinette Nwandu the recipient of the 2017-18 Paula Vogel Playwriting Award. Nwandu will be presented with the award at a celebration on Nov. 9 at the Vineyard Theatre.

Supported by the Tournesol Project, the Paula Vogel Playwriting Award recognizes an emerging playwright. Nwandu is the 10th recipient, and will receive a cash prize, work space, dramaturgical support, and collaborative resources to develop new work.

Nwandu is based in New York. Her plays include Pass Over, which premiered at the Steppenwolf Theatre (a production she wrote about for us here), and Breach, which will have its world premiere at Chicago’s Victory Gardens in Feb. 2018. She is currently under commission from Echo Theater Company and Colt Couer. Her plays have been developed and supported by the Sundance Theater Lab, MacDowell, the Cherry Lane Mentor Project, Kennedy Center, Page73, Ars Nova, PlayPenn, Space on Ryder Farm, Southern Rep, The Flea, Naked Angels, Fire This Time, and the Movement Theater Company. Her work has been included on the 2016 and 2017 Kilroys lists.

She has also received the Lorraine Hansberry Playwriting Award, the Negro Ensemble Company’s Douglas Turner Ward Prize, and a Literary Fellowship at the Eugene O’Neill Playwrights Conference. Nwandu is an alum of the Ars Nova Play Group, the Naked Angels Issues PlayLab, and Dramatists Guild Fellowship. She studied at Harvard, the University if Edinburgh, and Tisch School of the Arts.
