Childsplay and Rising Youth Theatre Sponsor Playwriting Competition

The Arizona–based youth theatres join forces with national organizations to offer students playwriting opportunities.

TEMPE, ARIZ.: Childsplay has announced that it will be partnering with Rising Youth Theatre to participate in Young Playwrights for Change, a nationwide playwriting competition for young artists. Sponsored by the American Alliance for Theatre Education (AATE) and Theatre for Young Audiences USA (TYAUSA), the project, which encourages 6th–8th grade students to write 10-minute plays on the subject of change, seeks “to harness the creativity of young playwrights to produce meaningful conversations throughout classrooms, schools, and communities across the country,” according to a recent statement.

The work of one playwright will be selected from the regional competition—sponsored by Childsplay and Rising Youth—and submitted for national review. The winning play of the national competition will receive a professionally staged reading at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. during TYAUSA’s One Theatre World Pre-conference on May 5, 2016.

Free playwriting workshops will be offered by Childsplay and Rising Youth on Saturday, Oct. 17 and 24 at Childsplay’s Campus for Imagination & Wonder in Tempe, Ariz. Childsplay artistic director designate Dwayne Hartford will instruct.
