NEW YORK CITY: The Play Company (PlayCo) has announced that Lauren Weigel is stepping down from her role as executive producer, effective June 30. She is stepping down to focus on her family and will continue with the theatre as an external advisor to founding producer Kate Loewald, the staff, and the board. A replacement has not been announced.

“PlayCo is a dynamic theatre company with 15 seasons under our belt thanks to Lauren’s dedication and leadership,” Loewald said in a statement. “It’s been a beautiful adventure to build this organization with her from early days. I treasure our partnership. We’ve made work we’re proud of and had a lot of fun. I will miss her, and I wish her and her family great happiness.”

Weigel, who joined the company in 2004 as an associate producer, has developed and produced thirty premieres at PlayCo, including international plays from Sweden, Poland, Japan, Romania, India, Germany, Russia, France, and Great Britain. During her tenure, she served more than 450 artists, and in 2007, the company won an OBIE award for its “unique contribution to the Off-Broadway theatre community,” due in part to Weigel’s focus on international programming.

“The Play Company is part of my bones,” Weigel said in a statement. “I have been fortunate to work with so many generous and talented people in my time here…I am proud of what we have built together and look forward to watching PlayCo continue to grow and thrive.”
