HARTFORD, CONN.: Hartford Stage announced Wednesday that playwright Christina Anderson is the recipient of this year’s Aetna New Voices Fellowship, a season-long residency that includes the commissioning and development of a new play.

“The range of Christina’s work, from pen/man/ship to Blacktop Sky to her recent The Ashes Under Gait City, is very impressive—whether set in the 19th century or the present, her plays are always immediate and compelling,” said Hartford Stage associate artistic director Elizabeth Williamson in a statement.

Anderson, whose Blacktop Sky was recently included on the Ferguson Theatre Syllabus, has seen her work performed at  American Conservatory Theatre, Yale Repertory Theatre, and the Contemporary American Theatre Festival. Anderson’s plays have twice been selected for inclusion in the Kilroys’ “List,” an annual survey of industry-recommended new plays by female and trans authors.

The Aetna New Voices Fellowship, now in its eleventh year, was established to provide an artistic home for diverse playwrights and strengthen the Greater Hartford community. Former New Voices Fellows include Matthew Lopez (The Whipping Man) and Pulitzer Prize-winner Quiara Alegría Hudes (Water by the Spoonful).
