The Flea Theater Announces 3 Plays for Spring 2016 Season

The Off-Off-Broadway theatre will feature world premieres from Adam Rapp and Sarah Gancher and a new play from Kristiana Colón.

NEW YORK CITY: The Flea Theater has announced its lineup for the spring 2016 season, which will include world premieres from Adam Rapp and Sarah Gancher,  and a new play from Kristiana Colón.

“I’m incredibly excited to welcome back Adam Rapp and to introduce our audiences to two exceptional playwrights: Sarah Gancher and Kristiana Colón,” said artistic director Niegel Smith in a statement. “Rapp pulls us to the rural South, and Colón yanks us back to 1970s New York City, introducing us to desperate yet hopeful families struggling for survival and empathy; while Gancher takes us to an exuberant community of artists and activists in contemporary Budapest who are plagued by their oppressive government. These searing new plays, featuring our resident company the Bats, are daring calls to our consciousness and hearts—celebrating our humanity and questioning our resolve to act.”

The spring season will begin with the New York premiere of but I cd only whisper (Feb. 18–March 14), by Colón and directed by David Monteagudo. Inspired by and including extracts from for colored girls… by Ntozake Shange, the play follows a Vietnam War veteran, Beau Willie Brown, returning home to his family.

Following will be Wolf in the River, written and directed by Rapp (March 10–May 2). The play is an exploration of love and neglect, the challenges of poverty, the dangerous cost of shiftlessness, the simple notion of leaving a place behind, and the value of a girl.

Closing the spring season will be The Place We Built (April 14–May 23), by Gancher and directed by Danya Taymor. The play takes place in post-communist Budapest, where a group of young bohemians are creating a vibrant new subculture and defending it against the oppressive government regime.

The season will also feature the return of #serials@theflea, produced by Cleo Gray and Crystal Arnette (Jan. 21–Sept. 23). The late-night short serial plays run Thurs.-Sat. at 11 p.m.
