LPTW Grants 12 NYC Theatres Gender Parity Seal of Approval

The award recognizes Off-Broadway theatres that achieved parity among their playwrights and directors.

NEW YORK CITY: The League of Professional Theatre Women (LPTW) awarded 12 Off-Broadway theatres the “LPTW Seal of Approval” for the 2014–15 season.  Eligible theatres must have produced at least two plays during the season and not have an institutional mission to exclusively produce female playwrights.

Two different seals were awarded. The LPTW Gold Seal was given to theatres in which 50 percent of playwrights or 50 percent of  directors (or both) in the last five seasons were women. The LPTW Seal was given to theatres in which 50 percent of playwrights or 50 percent of  directors (or both) in the 2014–15 season were women.

LPTW awarded the Gold Seal to Ensemble Studio Theatre, for playwright and director parity; Playwrights Horizons, for playwright parity; and Soho Rep and LAByrinth Theatre Company, for director parity. The LPTW Seal went to Lincoln Center Theater, for playwright and director parity; MCC Theatre and Manhattan Theatre Club, for playwright parity; and The Flea, The New Group, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, Roundabout Theatre Company, and Signature Theatre Company, for director parity.

The LPTW’s report on the hiring of women Off-Broadway, which documents the hiring practices at 22 Off-Broadway from 2010–15, provided the information used to select the winning theatres.

The LPTW is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing opportunities for women in theatre. It has 500 members representing various theatre professions, in both for-profit and non-profit sectors.
