Halcyon Theatre Slates Female-Focused 2016–17 Season

The Chicago theatre will feature works by María Irene Fornés, Marisela Treviño Orta, and Debbie Tucker Green.

CHICAGO: Halcyon Theatre has announced its 2016–17 season, featuring María Irene Fornés, Marisela Treviño Orta, and Debbie Tucker Green.

“With this upcoming season, I’m eager to continue exploring two writers whose work we have had long-term relationships and also to welcome two new companies into our space for coproductions,” said artistic director Tony Adams in a statement.

The season will begin with Fefu and Her Friends (Aug. 18–Oct. 8), by María Irene Fornés, about a woman who invites seven women into her New England home to rehearse a play for a charity event in 1935. Adams will direct. This will be the sixth time the theatre has produced a play by Fornés.

Next up will be the U.S. premiere of Debbie Tucker Green’s dirty butterfly (Nov. 3–Dec. 10), a coproduction with the Blind Owl, about three neighbors who get caught up in voyeuristic confessions and confront the violence they cannot escape. Azar Kazemi will direct.

Following will be the Chicago premiere of Marisela Treviño Orta’s The River Bride (May 11–June 18, 2017), about a woman pining over her sister’s future husband, and a mysterious stranger who offers the two sisters an alluring future.

A coproduction with A-Squared Theatre in spring 2017 will be announced at a later date.

Halcyon Theatre, founded in 2006, is dedicated to presenting new voices for underrepresented communities, and fostering new writers in workshops and labs.
