NATIONWIDE: Emerging Artist Initiative (EAI) has announced the launch of the Emerging Artist Relief Fund to provide immediate financial assistance to young and emerging artists and arts administrators struggling because of the coronavirus pandemic. The grassroots effort aims to initially award 30 artists and arts administrators each $500. Donations can be made here.
Since its launch on July 1, EAI has received more than 1,000 applications. The application will expire on July 22nd at midnight due to overwhelming demand.
“Many applicants can’t afford to pay rent, utilities, or buy groceries for the week,” EAI released in a statement. “The Initiative has raised just over a third towards their $15,000 goal, and is asking for financial support on their website, www.eaifund.com, so they can give financial relief to as many young artists as possible.”
To apply, artists and arts administrators must be under 30, and within three years of receiving a degree or certification or within three years of beginning work as an arts professional. Full eligibility requirements and application information can be found here. A team of emerging artists carefully reviews each application, and an advisory board of arts professionals maintains oversight of financial and fund distribution. In addition to the Relief Fund, EAI hopes to give young and emerging artists a platform to showcase their work and advocate for institutional reform.
“This initiative really goes beyond losing a role, internship, or gig,” said EAI directorEvan Aanerud in a statement. “We want to encourage young people to use this pivotal moment to ask critical questions of the theatres, museums, and institutions that have perpetuated inequalities in our industry.”
