Samuel French Announces Short Play Festival Winners

The winners include works by Helen Park, Gracie Gardner, and Nelson Diaz-Marcano.

NEW YORK CITY: Samuel French has announced the winners of the 43rd annual Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival. The six winning titles, which will be published and available for licensing by Samuel French, were selected and announced at the conclusion of the festival on Aug. 26.

The winners are: Baked Goods Book, by Charlie Cohen, with lyrics by Christyn Budzyna, music by Helen Park, and orchestrations by Collin Marti; Ballgirl by Gracie Gardner; Better by Vince Gatton; The Ferberizing of Coral by Patrick Flynn; The Forgotten Place by Jeff Locker; and Rabiosa by Nelson Diaz-Marcano.

The plays were chosen from a pool of more than 850 submissions, competed for the six prize spots. The judging panel included Kirsten Childs, David Greenspan, Hansol Jung, Max Vernon, John M. Baker, Nan Barnett, Ken Cerniglia, B.J. Evans, Chris Giordano, Adam Greenfield, Lisa Rothe, and Susan Westfall.

“I’m always happy to judge OOB because of the opportunity to meet dedicated playwrights and experience interesting work,” said Westfall in a statement. She is the cofounder and literary director of Miami’s City Theatre. “This was an exceptionally rich and rewarding festival! I congratulate the Samuel French staff, all of the playwrights and artists who participated, and the audiences who enjoyed exciting and entertaining plays by OOB’s Class of 2018.”
