CSC Announces 2016–17 Season, Its First Under John Doyle

The new artistic director will helm two works in the theatre’s season.

NEW YORK CITY: Classic Stage Company has announced the lineup for its 2016–17 season, the first under new artistic director John Doyle.

“It is thrilling to be announcing our new season for CSC,” Doyle said in a statement. “Three great stories written by top writers providing, I hope, variety and continuity.”

The world premiere of Dead Poets Society (October), based on the 1989 film, will open the season. Academy Award winner Tom Schulman will adapt the play from his screenplay, which is set at an all-boys school where an unconventional teacher inspires his students to defy conformity. Doyle will direct.

David Ives’s adaptation of Pierre Corneille’s The Liar (January 2017) will be next. This production marks the fifth collaboration between Ives and CSC. Michael Kahn will direct.

Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s Pacific Overtures (April 2017) will conclude the season. The show is set in 1853 Imperial Japan, as the nation begins to open up the country to the West. Doyle will direct.

Founded in 1967, Classic Stage Company is an Off-Broadway theatre devoted to reimagining classic works.
