5 Theatre Festivals This Month

From shadow puppetry to chamber operas, here are some experimental theatre festivals taking place this month.

Performance Space 122’s Coil 2017 Festival, running Jan. 3-22, includes a virtual reality experience, a dance performance featuring 64 robotic instruments, and even a live installation at the Invisible Dog Art Center.

The second annual Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival, Jan. 19-29, will feature more than a dozen presenting organizations from the Windy City. The ten-day festival will showcase foot puppets, contortionists, mimes, and masks.

The Prototype 2017 Festival at HERE in New York City, running Jan. 5-15, showcases opera and music theatre selections. This year’s lineup features multi-media concerts, musicals, and operas, including the world premiere of the opera theatre piece Mata Hari.

The Public Theater‘s Under the Radar Festival in New York City, running Jan. 4-15, has more than a dozen shows and talk-back sessions showcasing artists from around the world. Selections include a musical at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, and an immersive installation held within the Egyptian wing at the Brooklyn Museum.

La MaMa’s Squirts: Generations of Queer Performance, curated by Dan Fishback, brings queer artists together to present theatre, comedy, music, and dance performances at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in New York City. In addition to drag performances and spoken word presentations, the programming also includes conversations about the community of queer artists. Proceeds from the festival will benefit Princess Janae Place, which provides housing for transgender people in the Bronx, N.Y.
