Shakespeare Theatre Company Leads 2016 Helen Hayes Award Winners

Constellation Theatre Company and the Welders were also among honorees at the 2015 ceremony.

WASHINGTON, D.C.: TheatreWashington named the recipients of the Helen Hayes Awards, which honor the best in D.C. theatre, and gave them out in a ceremony on May 23. The event celebrated the 236 nominees, the 47 recipients, and more than 90 professional productions from 2015.

Shakespeare Theatre Company received a total of 13 awards, including 7 honors for its production of Salomé. Other big winners were Constellation Theatre Company, which received 7 awards for its production of Avenue Q, and GALA Hispanic Theatre, with 6 awards for its production of Yerma. The John Aniello Award for outstanding emerging theatre company was given to the Welders, a playwrights’ collective that develops and produces world premiere works.

Forty judges selected the nominees and recipients. The awards were separated into two categories: “Helen” and “Hayes.” A winner was announced for each, and the groupings were determined based on the number of Actors’ Equity contacts for a production.
