NASHVILLE: Nashville Repertory Theatre has named Micah-Shane Brewer their new artistic director. Brewer previously served as a producer at the theatre.
“On behalf of everyone at Nashville Repertory Theatre, I am honored to welcome Micah-Shane Brewer to the role of artistic director,” board president Lorrie Brouse said in a statement. “His artistic leadership was instrumental to the Rep’s highly successful return to live programming, and his extensive skills as a director, actor, musician, and educator will be huge assets to the organization.”
Brewer, who will be Nashville Rep’s fifth artistic director, began working with the company as a teaching artist in 2020. As a producer, Brewer directed Nashville Rep’s first production since the pandemic shutdown, the musical Ragtime, in addition to other shows. Prior to Nashville Rep, Brewer co-founded Encore Theatrical Company in Morristown, Tenn. His directing credits include the Clarence Brown Theatre, Cardinal Stage Company, and the University of Mississippi, where he previously served as an assistant professor of musical theatre. Brewer holds a B.A. from the University of North Carolina and an MFA from the University of Tennessee, where he was also a lecturer.
“I am grateful that Nashville Rep’s board of directors has entrusted me with this role,” Brewer said in a statement. “Nashville Rep is one of the leading arts institutions in the city, and the honor of guiding its artistic mission is exciting. We are unique among regional theatres in that we are committed to supporting and developing our local artists, and I am looking forward to deepening our relationships as we grow our programming.”
Brewer is currently directing Nashville Rep’s production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and curating the 2023-24 season. He will join executive director Drew Ogle as part of the theatre’s senior leadership team.
Nashville Repertory Theatre has been Nashville’s premier regional theatre since 1985, entertaining and inspiring audiences by creating exceptional theatre that explores the diversity of the human experience. Nashville Rep produces work designed, built, and rehearsed in Nashville, serving as a cultural, educational, and economic resource in the city and in Middle Tennessee.
