Offscript: Live! It’s Not Lonely at the Top

Live at the Lark, American Theatre editors announced the season’s top plays and playwrights, and spoke to two of them, Lucas Hnath and Karen Zacarías.

Offscript is a podcast occasionally produced by the editors of American Theatre.

The following podcast episode was recorded live at the Lark writing center in New York City, where, on Sept. 20, the editors of American Theatre gathered for a live unveiling of our annual lists of the Top 10 Most-Produced Plays and Top 20 Most-Produced Playwrights.

The evening also included a discussion of the most-produced play in the country: A Doll’s House, Part 2 by Lucas Hnath, a sequel to Ibsen’s classic that played on Broadway in 2017 just after its premiere at South Coast Repertory, which commissioned the play. Actor Quincy Tyler Bernstine (Ruined, Small Mouth Sounds, Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play) performed an excerpt from the play, and Hnath talked about why he chose to expand on Ibsen.

Next was a conversation with Washington, D.C.-based playwright Karen Zacarías, a mainstay of our top playwrights for the past two years, whose play Native Gardens also makes an appearance on this year’s Top 10 list. She talked about how she started as a writer, and how she finds success without the New York City seal of approval.
