Renaissance TheaterWorks Sets All-Female 2017-18 Season

The Milwaukee theatre will also present a new-play festival as part of the season.

MILWAUKEE: Renaissance Theaterworks has announced its 2017-18 season, billed as “A Season of Top Girls.” The lineup includes three plays, all by women.

The season opens with Sex with Strangers by Laura Eason (Oct. 20-Nov. 12), about a 40something female novelist who has a short affair with a twentysomething male blogger. Mallory Metoxen will direct.

Next will be Russian Transport by Erika Sheffer (Jan. 19-Feb. 11, 2018). The play takes place in Brooklyn, where a Russian immigrant family welcomes their Uncle Boris from Russia, who brings with him some dark family secrets.

The final play of the season will be Top Girls by Caryl Churchill (April 6-29, 2018). When Marlene is promoted, she celebrates by hosting a dinner party where five legendary women are invited, and where they discuss the sacrifices required to have it all.

In addition to the productions, TheaterWorks will host the fourth annual Br!NK New Play Festival, where it will present plays by Midwestern women in a series of workshops and public staged readings (Sept 9-12). The plays presented will be Annie Jump and the Library of Heaven by Reina Hardy and The Endurance of Light by Amanda Petefish-Schrag. The 2017 festival will also feature 10-minute plays by Midwestern female playwrights.

Renaissance TheaterWorks is Milwaukee’s only women-founded, women-run professional theatre company. The theatre focuses on providing substantive roles for women on and offstage.
