Token Theatre Friends: Adrienne C. Moore on Getting Ntozake Shange’s Approval

The ‘Orange is the New Black’ actress discusses learning how to dance for ‘for colored girls….’ at the Public Theater. Plus reviews of ‘Moulin Rouge,’ ‘Little Shop of Horrors,’ and ‘Soft Power.’

Twice a month on the Token Theatre Friends video series and podcast, theatre critics (and theatre besties) Jose Solís and Diep Tran bring a POC perspective to the performing arts.

The friends talk with Adrienne C. Moore, star of “Orange is the New Black,” who is currently starring in the first major New York revival of for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf by Ntozake Shange. She discusses working with Shange on the play before she died, and how it was the first monologue she ever auditioned with.

The audio of the interview is also available on the podcast, where the Friends review three shows currently playing in New York City:

Soft Power by David Henry Hwang and Jeanine Tesori, currently running at the Public Theater through Nov. 17 ($100). In this send-up of The King and I, a Chinese entertainment producer meets Hillary Clinton and teaches her a thing or two about politics.

Little Shop of Horrors by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman at the Westside Theatre ($69-$179). In 2019, should a classic musical about the man-eating plant be more than pure entertainment?

Moulin Rouge by John Logan and Alex Timbers, based on the Baz Luhrmann film, currently running on Broadway ($119-$249). A penniless American writer falls in love with a Parisian courtesan, while singing modern pop songs.

At the end of the show, the Friends discuss Jose’s ongoing feud with Second Stage Theatre, and the ways that theatre is still unwelcoming to people of color.
