Offscript: Karen Hartman’s Triple Feature

For this episode we talk to playwright Karen Hartman, who currently has 3 plays making NYC premieres in 59E59’s first VOLT Festival.

Offscript, American Theatre’s flagship podcast for a number of years, is back as a Facebook Live chat with the magazine’s editors and special guests as well as an audio podcast.

On this episode, we speak to playwright Karen Hartman about having three simultaneous NYC premieres at the 59E59 Theaters 2022 VOLT Festival. The Lucky Star (April 26-June 12) is a harrowing family drama about one man’s discovery of over 200 letters written in three languages that reveal clues about his family’s history during the Holocaust, adapted from Richard Hollander’s book, Every Day Lasts a Year: A Jewish Family’s Correspondence from Poland. New Golden Age (April 28-June 9) is a dystopian thriller exploring relationships in a tech-dominated future, and Goldie, Max and Milk (May 1-June 4) is a relatable comedy about what happens when a lesbian single mother, her drug-dealing sperm donor, and an Orthodox Jewish lactation consultant must come together to care for a newborn. With Karen we talk about the creative process, the state of theatre, and the harmonies that exist among these three tonally distinct plays.
