Each month on The Subtext, Brian speaks with a playwright about life, writing, and whatever itches we are scratching.
This month he talks to Andrew Rosendorf, a Minneapolis-based writer whose plays include Refuge, a National New Play Network rolling world premiere he co-created with Satya Jnani Chávez, One-Shot, Stockade, and Paper Cut. He talks with Brian about what brought him to the Twin Cities (the Playwrights’ Center), about how playwriting allowed him to deal with what he was unable to deal with in real life, namely his sexuality and his challenging family dynamics, about his formative experiences at Florida Stage and how they helped him find his playwriting voice.
Rosendorf has been produced or developed at La Jolla, MCC, DCPA, KC Rep, Signature Theatre, Florida Stage, Unicorn Theatre, American Theater Company, Nashville Rep, City Theatre, Geva Theatre, Actor’s Express, Curious Theatre Company, and Local Theater Company. He is the recipient of an Edgerton Foundation New Play Award, a Venturous Theater Fund Grant, and a MAP Fund Grant, and he’s an alum of the Goodman’s Playwrights Unit and NNPN’s Playwright-in-Residence program. He was a previous McKnight and Jerome Fellow at the Playwrights’ Center as well as Core Writer. An associate artist with Local Theater Company, he’s currently developing a television pilot with Amblin.
