Offscript: Danya Taymor & Knud Adams’s Ensemble Ethos

This month we talk to 2 Tony-nominated directors who specialize in new plays, and catch up with tireless critic Chris Jones for a recap of the Broadway season.

Offscript is American Theatre’s flagship podcast, available wherever you get your podcasts (including Spotify and Apple Podcasts), in which the magazine’s editors, writers, and special guests tell us what they’re up to and what’s on their mind.

Danya Taymor, Knud Adams.

This month, in a lead-up to the Tony Awards on June 8, we talk to two of directors nominated for directing plays: Danya Taymor, a previous Tony winner (for The Outsiders), who’s nominated for directing Kimberly Belflower’s John Proctor Is the Villain, and Knud Adams, nominated for his Broadway debut directing Sanaz Toossi’s English at Roundabout Theatre. Editor Rob Weinert-Kendt brought them together specifically because of their skill in creating believable onstage ensembles, but the conversation ranges freely from the rehearsal room to the state of the world.

Then managing editor Jerald Raymond Pierce caught up with the incredibly busy Chris Jones, chief theatre critic for The Chicago Tribune and theatre critic for NY Daily News, about the trends and highlights of this past Broadway season: stars, technology, and a fresh infusion of talent in all departments.
