Each month on The Subtext, Brian speaks with a playwright about life, writing, and whatever itches we are scratching.
This month he talks to Rachel Bublitz, a Salt Lake City-based writer whose plays include Funny, Like an Abortion (which received a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere by Mile Square Theatre, Cleveland Public Theatre, and The VORTEX, and was recently published), Ripped, and The Night Witches, which has received more than 50 productions worldwide.
Bublitz grew up doing theatre as an actor, director, and backstage worker but didn’t start writing plays until she became a mom in her early 20s. After meeting Jaime Wilcox at Egyptian YouTheatre in Park City, Utah, she straight up asked if they would commission her to write a play she wanted to write titled Cheerleaders Versus Aliens. The play got workshopped and produced and then published, which functioned as a stepping-stone for her to get more productions and publications.
Her work has since been produced at theatres and schools across the country, as well as in Canada, England, Ireland, and Australia. Other credits closer to home include Let’s Fix Andy at Salt Lake Acting Company, Hear Us Roar at the University of Utah, Tip Top Triangle at Plan-B Theatre, and Burst at Utah Shakespeare Festival. She’s received two commissions from publisher Stage Partners; The Book Women and The Hardy Girls. When she’s not writing, she’s watching her kids dominate at water polo.
