Theatre Commons L.A. Created to Serve L.A. Theatres

The new community-powered nonprofit organization aims to serve and advance a vibrant and inclusive L.A. theatre ecosystem. The first step: a comprehensive listings website.

LOS ANGELES: Theatre leaders, artists, and supporters have come together to launch Theatre Commons L.A. (TCLA), a new community-powered nonprofit organization created in service of the entire L.A. theatre ecosystem. The org’s first step is a centralized public listings website, TheatreCommonsLA.org, that makes it simple for audiences to discover what’s currently playing and upcoming across the full spectrum of theatres in the greater Los Angeles area.

“TCLA is about building a stronger theatre ecosystem for all of us,” said the TCLA Steering Committee in a joint statement. “This shared hub connects L.A. audiences to L.A. stages and is just the beginning of our efforts to help Los Angeles theatre thrive.”

Listings can be filtered by date, neighborhood, and genre, eliminating the need to visit dozens of individual theatre websites, and directing people to find shows and tickets from a unified hub. These functions are similar to regional listings websites provided by such similar organizations as TheatreWashington and the League of Chicago Theatres’s Chicago Plays. L.A. theatres interested in listing their productions can visit TheatreCommonsLA.org for more information or to sign up.

The TCLA steering committee comprises Snehal Desai, artistic director at Center Theatre Group; Danny Feldman, producing artistic director at Pasadena Playhouse; Donna Simone Johnson, co-artistic director at Watts Village Theatre Company; Mayank Keshaviah, independent writer and theatre critic; Jessica Kubzansky, artistic director at Boston Court Pasadena; Stefanie Lau, producing artistic leader at Artists at Play; Armando Molina, artistic director at Company of Angels; Cricket Myers, independent sound designer; Celia Mandela Rivera, actor, director, creator of BLKLST, and literary manager at IAMA Theatre Company; and DeLanna Studi, artistic director at Native Voices.

The new service organization’s initial work, including the new listings website, was undertaken by a volunteer steering committee and funded by the Nonprofit Sustainability Initiative. In September of 2025, the Perenchio Foundation made a major investment in TCLA’s work, sustaining the organization’s next phase of growth, including hiring of an executive director. The TCLA steering committee has created a road map for the new organization, including the hiring of their first executive director, establishing a board of directors, and launching programming in service of the robust network of theatres and theatremakers in the Los Angeles area.

With a mission of serving and advancing a vibrant and inclusive theatre community, the new organization fills a gap left by the dissolution of L.A. Stage Alliance in 2021 (that organization was previously called Theatre LA). The new organization will focus on community collaboration to strengthen connections, share resources, and champion equitable opportunity across the field. TCLA will also serve as a collective voice in advocating for resources and issues pertaining to the L.A. theatre community.

In August 2021, 12 longstanding members, representing a cross-section of the Los Angeles theatremaking community voluntarily convened as a steering committee, committing to the rigorous process of conceiving, negotiating, and establishing objectives for a new theatre service organization. This collective embodies the rich diversity of the local theatre ecosystem. Michaela Bulkley is currently TCLA’s administrative coordinator, and served on the steering committee from 2021 to 2024.
