Each month on The Subtext, Brian speaks with a playwright about life, writing, and whatever itches we are scratching.
This month’s guest is Dave Osmundsen, who discusses his life as an autistic person and why it took him many years to begin writing it. In discussing his childhood, Osmundsen mentions attending a Christian camp in New Hampshire—coincidentally on the same lake where Brian grew up—and how that inspired his epic play Berrywild. Osmundsen’s work has produced by BLUEBARN Theatre, EPIC Players, and Island City Stage. He was the inaugural recipient of the Future of Playwriting Prize from the Blank and Ucross, has been commissioned by the Telephone Plays project by 24/6: A Jewish Theatre Company, and has been a four-time O’Neill semi-finalist. His play Light Switch received an award-winning run in Chicago, and was given its Southeastern premiere by Island City Stage. He also survived the heat of Arizona and the isolation of a pandemic to obtain an MFA from Arizona State University.
The play that’s filling up Brian this month: Sara Farrington’s Look Out.
