SITI Company Announces Spring 2015 Programming, Conservatory Schedule

The NYC-based ensemble will premiere ‘the theater is a blank page,’ a collaboration with visual artist Ann Hamilton, plus more tour dates for ‘A Rite’ and ‘Steel Hammer.’

NEW YORK CITY: SITI Company, the ensemble founded by Anne Bogart and Tadashi Suzuki, has announced programming for spring 2015. On schedule which will be the world premiere of a new work made with Ann Hamilton and additional tour dates for the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company collaboration A Rite.

Visual installation artist Hamilton will partner with SITI for the theater is a blank page (April 23–26), an immersive performance event to take place at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio. The piece will incorporate text from Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse while exploring the medium of theatre. Hamilton and SITI previously collaborated on the event of a thread at Park Avenue Armory in New York City in 2012.

SITI also announced additional tour dates for A Rite, an exploration on Stravinksy’s Rite of Spring, created in collaboration with Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. A Rite has been consistently on tour since its premiere in 2013 at Carolina Performing Arts Center. The spring 2014 stops will tour be the Center for the Art of Performance at University of California–Los Angeles (March 6–7) and then to the ‘62 Center for Theatre and Dance at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass (March 17).

In the fall, SITI will also tour Steel Hammer, their collaboration with composer Julia Wolfe and the music collective Bang on a Can All-Stars. The play with music explores the legend of John Henry, who in folk tales went up against a steam-powered hammer during the construction of the American railroad. The piece began as a musical composition by Wolfe; it was a Pulitzer finalist. Steel Hammer originally played as part of the 2014 Humana Festival of New American Plays. The tour dates for fall 2015 will be announced later.

In addition to the spring programming, SITI also announced changes to the SITI Conservatory, its one-year training program for theatre artists. Beginning this fall, the Conservatory will run every two years. For non-Conservatory years, SITI will offer two-six-week long Training Studios.
