The cast and creative team of "The Band's Visit" accept the Tony Award for Best Musical.

‘Jagged Little Pill,’ ‘Slave Play’ Top 2020 Tony Noms

The nominations cover eligible productions that opened between April 26, 2019 and Feb. 19, 2020, weeks before Broadway’s COVID-19 shutdown.

NEW YORK CITY: Nominations for the 74th Tony Awards, presented by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, were announced today during a virtual ceremony after a months-long postponement of the annual theatre tradition. The nominations also come on the heels of the news that the suspension of Broadway productions due to COVID-19 has been extended through the end of May 2021. Official details for the 2020 awards ceremony itself have yet to be announced.

The nominations for this year’s COVID-shortened season were selected by an independent committee of 41 theatre professionals appointed by the Tony Awards Administration Committee and will be voted on by 784 Tony voters. Due to the pandemic, the eligibility season, which began on April 26, 2019, officially ended on Feb. 19, a few weeks before Broadway’s March announcement that all shows would close.

Jagged Little Pill leads all productions with 15 nominations, with Slave Play leading all plays with 12. This year also sees Aaron Tveit as the lone nominee for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, which brings into play the following rule: “If the Tony Awards Nominating Committee has determined that if there is only one nominee in a category listed, such category shall be submitted to the Tony Voters which may, by the affirmative vote of [60 percent] of the total ballots cast, grant an Award in that category.”
