A spate of new productions and adaptations explore the geopolitical and theatrical legacies of an empire in decline.
The awards will allow 28 productions more time for rehearsal and development with the entire creative team.
The racist stereotypes and erasure perpetuated on white-dominated U.S. stages have real-world consequences outside the theatre.
The musical about the life of the famed Polish painter will be directed by Tony winner Rachel Chavkin.
The playwrights will each receive a $50,000 cash prize.
The prize comes with $275,000 each.
Also cited were Noah Haidle’s ‘Birthday Candles’ and Jen Silverman’s ‘Witch,’ with the Osborn Award going to Spenser Davis’s ‘Plainclothes.’
The two artists will be produced multiple times over a single season at the Off-Broadway theatre; Samuel D. Hunter, Lauren Yee, and collective the Mad Ones will join the Residency 5 program.
Each playwright will receive an award of $50,000.
Among the finalists are Heidi Schreck, Lauren Yee, Martyna Majok, Hilary Bettis, Lily Padilla, and Jackie Sibblies Drury.
